Mandatory Insurance Coverages
Liability
Liability coverage protects you in the event of injuries and damages to other people and property caused by the negligent operation of your car.
Vermont Auto Insurance Law sets a mandatory amount of liability coverage that must be included in your insurance policy. These amounts represent the maximum amount of money your policy will pay out, even if your losses are higher. The mandatory amounts of liability coverage in the State of Vermont are:
- For bodily injury or death per injured person (subject to the "per accident" limit) - $25,000
- For bodily injury or death per accident (maximum payable for more than one person) - $50,000
- For property damage per accident - $10,000
These are the minimum amounts of liability coverage allowed by Vermont law. In most cases, it is advisable to include higher amounts of liability coverage in your auto insurance policy.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists (UM/UIM) provides coverage for bodily injury to you and your passengers if you are involved in an accident caused by a driver who is uninsured or underinsured.
The minimum amounts of UM/UIM coverage mandated by Vermont Auto Insurance Law are:
- For bodily injury or death per injured person (subject to the "per accident limit") - $50,000
- For bodily injury or death per accident (maximum payable for more than one person) - $100,000
- Property damage per claim - $10,000
Optional Insurance Coverages
Collision
Collision coverage pays for physical damage to your car and usually includes a deductible - an amount of money you must pay out of pocket toward covering the loss. In most cases, the higher the deductible, the less expensive the premiums. While collision coverage is optional in Vermont, if your vehicle is financed, the lien holder may require you to maintain this coverage.
Other Than Collision
Other Than Collision (many policies now use this term, also known as "Comprehensive") covers damage resulting from something other than colliding with another vehicle. There is a deductible, and the following specified causes of damage are covered under this category:
- Glass breakage
- Theft
- Fire
- Contact with bird or animal (includes collisions with deer and moose)
- Wind
- Hail, water or flood
- Vandalism
- Missiles or falling objects
- Explosion or earthquake
- Riot or civil commotion
Medical Payments
Medical Payments coverage insures drivers and their passengers for medical expenses resulting from an auto accident. There is no deductible. This part of your policy covers you regardless of whether the driver or injured person was at fault.
This coverage extends to include members of the insured's household ith they are injured while:
- they are passengers in other people's cars
- using public transportation
- as a pedestrian, they are struck by another vehicle
Rental Reimbursement
Rental Reimbursement coverage usually pays $15 to $20 per day for a specified number of days to reimburse you for the cost of renting a car while yours is being repaired.
Towing and Labor
Towing and Labor coverage pays the cost of towing or starting your car, subject to conditions of your policy.
